Croajingolong National Park
Shipwreck Creek Camping Guide
There are many delightful places to camp in and near Croajingolong National Park. These notes describe the Shipwreck Creek camping area, where there are 5 sites in an unspoilt forest setting close to an ocean beach.
Location and Access
The camping area is near the mouth of Shipwreck Creek, 45 minutes drive from Mallacoota. To reach the camp, follow the Betka Road from Mallacoota, then the Centre and Betka tracks, and finally turn left onto the Old Coast Road to the camp. These tracks are unsealed, narrow and steep in places. They can be slippery after heavy rain, and are definitely not suitable for caravans.
Facilities and Accommodation
A pit toilet and fireplaces are provided. Fresh water is available from Shipwreck Creek further upstream. The nearest supplies (food, ice, gas etc) are at Mallacoota.
Looking After the Park
Help to protect the Park by following these basic rules and regulations:
- Camp within the defined areas
- Light fires only in the fireplaces provided
- Firearms are not allowed in the Park
- Dogs, cats and other pets are not permitted
- Please take your rubbish away with you
Things to See and Do
A variety of walks is available. The heathlands can be explored on foot either towards Mallacoota or Seal Creek. A day walk can be made to the Benedore River, (see map). Shipwreck Creek is ideal for paddling, but the surf beach is suitable only for experienced swimmers.
Bookings
Advance bookings, selected by ballot, are required for the Christmas and Easter holidays. Christmas bookings open on 1 September for 6 weeks and Easter bookings on 1 January for 6 weeks, at the Cann River Information Centre. Christmas bookings must be made for a minimum of one week (10.00 am Saturday – 10.00 am Saturday). Bookings are not accepted for other periods, but it is wise to contact the Park to ensure that sites are available.
